UFC 241 fight night weights: Daniel Cormier 14 pounds heavier than Stipe Miocic

Daniel Cormier | Esther Lin, MMA Fighting

Both Daniel Cormier and Stipe Miocic were lighter at Friday’s weigh-ins for their main event rematch at UFC 241 than in their first encounter last July. However, when fight night rolled around, Cormier curiously came in considerably heavier.

Per a document obtained from the California State Athletic Commission by MMA Fighting’s Damon Martin, Cormier weighed in at 247 pounds on Saturday compared to 236.5 pounds the previous day, a 4.4 percent difference. Miocic was 230.5 pounds on Friday and just 2.5 pounds heavier the next day.

It’s unclear why there was such a large change in Cormier’s weight from Friday to Saturday, but whatever advantage it may have provided was not enough to carry “DC” to a win. Miocic reclaimed the heavyweight title from Cormier via fourth-round TKO.

A large number of fighters competing at UFC 241 saw a 10 percent difference between their pre-fight weight and their fight night weight, most significantly bantamweight Manny Bermudez. The 25-year-old missed weight in his last outing in February and this time he and opponent Casey Kenney agreed to a 140-pound catchweight bout after it was suggested by UFC officials.

Both fighters successfully made weight on Friday, but Bermudez weighed in on Saturday at 164.8 pounds, a 17.7 percent increase. Kenney’s fight night weight was 145 pounds and following his unanimous decision win over Bermudez, he correctly guessed that his opponent was around 20 pounds heavier.

The CSAC reserves the right to recommend that any fighter who has a 10 percent difference in their pre-fight and fight night weights move up a division, though commission doctors and officials can use their own discretion when deciding if that recommendation is necessary.

Other notable fight night gains include featherweight Sodiq Yusuff, who went from 145 pounds to 169.2 pounds (16.7 percent), flyweight Sabina Mazo, who went from 126 pounds to 145.6 pounds (15.6 percent), bantamweight Kyung Ho Kang who went from 136 pounds to 156.4 pounds (15 percent), and middleweight Paulo Costa who went from 186 pounds to 213.8 pounds (14.9 percent).
